Taking care of workers means taking care of the operation: Makana at Ultraport Angamos

How the port of Angamos rolled out on-site wellbeing rooms to prevent musculoskeletal disorders and move toward zero occupational diseases

The challenge

Ultraport Angamos operates in a physically demanding environment. The HSE team identified that workers were exposed to musculoskeletal disorders caused by load handling and overexertion, with the risk of turning into long-term occupational diseases.

The need was clear: go beyond reactive prevention and put permanent, on-site, measurable support in place so workers could recover without leaving the operation.

What we did with Makana

Makana rolled out physical wellbeing rooms at different points across the port, open during the shift so workers can recover, rest, and get moving again before going back to their tasks.

The program includes:

  • On-site rooms spread across the Ultraport Angamos site.
  • Monthly reports on attendance and progress room by room, for short-, medium-, and long-term follow-up.
  • A focus on recovery from fatigue and on catching aches before they escalate into injuries.
  • Support on ergonomics and on reducing overexertion along the operational line.

Results

The HSE team at Ultraport Angamos tracks results continuously through Makana's monthly reports. The program has become a key part of the department's work, with strong take-up among workers and systematic follow-up of every room set up across the port.

The concrete goal driving the program: zero occupational diseases tied to muscle strain and overexertion.

"Makana is here to stay, to take care of our workers, because we believe that taking care of our workers today also means taking care of the operation. We give them a place to rest, to unwind, but also to get moving again after a break so they can get back to work."

— Romina Urzúa Jorquera, Deputy HSE Manager, Ultraport Angamos
